Quicktalker Freestyle users under the age of 18 in certain states will need a Child Apple Account. With an Adult account linked through family sharing, you can manage app downloads, in-app purchases, and app subscriptions.

Before You Begin

Is this the right article for you?

If your loved one is under 18 and you are in Texas, Utah, or Louisiana, you’re in the right place!

For all other QuickTalker Freestyle users, follow the steps in Create a Dedicated QuickTalker Freestyle Apple Account.

You’ll need:

  • A personal iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later
  • A personal, Adult Apple Account or a dedicated QuickTalker Freestyle Apple Account and password.
  • A credit card or other payment method (used for age verification).
  • Access to the email address and phone number on your Apple Account, so you can receive verification codes.
  • Connect Your Device to Wi-Fi.

Set Up Your Parent Account

Your parent account is the Apple Account you’ll use to approve your child’s downloads and purchases. If you already have one that’s ready to use, skip to “Turn On Family Sharing and Create the Child Account.”

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, then tap your name at the top.
  2. Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple Account you want to use as your parent account.
  3. Tap Password & Security, then tap Two-Factor Authentication and turn it on. This protects your account and is required to manage a child account.
  4. Go back to your account settings, then tap Payment & Shipping.
  5. Make sure a valid credit card or payment method is on file. Parent accounts need one to make App Store purchases.

Turn On Family Sharing and Create the Child Account

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, then tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Family Sharing.
  3. Tap Continue on the pop-up that explains Family Sharing.
    • If you already use Family Sharing, tap Add Family Member instead.
  4. Tap Create Child Account.
  5. Enter your child’s name and birthday, then tap Create Child Account.
  6. Tap Continue on the “Parental Consent” pop-up.
  7. Enter your parent Apple Account password, then tap Sign In.
  8. Check the email connected to your account for a verification code, then enter the code on your screen.
  9. Read the “Family Privacy Disclosure” pop-up, then tap Agree.
  10.  Read the “Terms and Conditions” pop-up, then tap Agree.

Create an iCloud Email Address for Your Child

Your child will use this email address and password to sign in on the QuickTalker Freestyle.

  1. Enter the iCloud email address you want for your child, then tap Continue. A good example is [email protected].
    • If you’re asked for an existing email address, tap Don’t Have an Email Address, then tap Create iCloud Email Address.
  2. Tap Create Email Address if the email address you’ve typed in is available.
  3. Create a password for your child’s account. Don’t use your child’s first or last name in the password.
  4. Tap Continue.

Set Up Verification and Parental Controls

  1. Confirm the phone number on the “Phone Number” pop-up. It must match the phone number on your parent Apple Account. Apple sends a verification code to this number each time the child account signs in.
  2. Tap Use +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx, which shows your own phone number, to send a code.
  3. Open your text messages, then enter the code on the verification screen.
  4. Tap Continue on the “Parental Controls” pop-up.
  5. Enter a 4-digit passcode on the “Lock Parental Controls” pop-up, then enter it again to confirm.
  6. Tap Continue to turn on “Ask to Buy.” This sends you a request to approve each download or purchase.
  7. Tap Done on the “All Set” page.
