As AAC is introduced, oftentimes there is a need for additional accessories to best support the user. Keyguards are a commonly used accessory that supports successful AAC use.

What is a Keyguard? πŸ”—

Keyguards help individuals use their QuickTalker Freestyle device more accurately by providing physical boundaries around each button. Made of durable plastic, keyguards can be attached to the device using clips or placed directly into the case, depending on the device model. Since every AAC user has unique needs, keyguards can be customized to fit any grid size and layout.

When to Use a KeyguardπŸ”—

Not everyone needs a keyguard, but here are some examples of when it’s a good idea to consider one.

Visual DeficitsπŸ”—

Keyguards can support individuals with visual impairments by creating clear physical separation between icons, which improves visual discrimination. The raised borders around each selection area make it easier for users to locate and distinguish targets on the screen, supporting more accurate and independent communication.

Fine Motor DelaysπŸ”—

Keyguards can be beneficial for individuals with fine motor or motor challenges by helping guide finger placement and reducing accidental button selections. Physical barriers between buttons support more accurate access, decrease frustration, and allow users to make selections more independently, reducing the need for physical assistance from communication partners.

Stimming SupportπŸ”—

Keyguards may help reduce stimming behaviors that interfere with device use, such as hitting the screen with a full hand or activating multiple buttons at once. The keyguard helps direct movements toward intended selections, reducing unintended activations, and supporting more effective and consistent communication.

How Can I Get a Keyguard?πŸ”—

Keyguards are available at no additional cost as part of your built-in five-year warranty for your QuickTalker Freestyle. Whether you need a standard template, custom design, modifications, or replacements, we’re here to support your communication needs.
