Keyguards fit over your speech app’s buttons, creating a border users can feel around each one. This reduces accidental touches and supports independent communication for people with motor challenges or visual impairments.

Keyguards are available at no additional cost as part of ableCARE coverage for your QuickTalker Freestyle. Whether you need a standard template, a custom design, modifications or replacements, we’re here to support your communication needs.

Before You Begin

Have this information ready before you start your keyguard request:

• Funding Request Number (FN)
• SLP’s information
• Shipping information
• Caregiver’s or legal guardian’s email address
• iPad size and device type (see “Keyguard FAQs”)
• Speech app name, vocabulary category, and layout name (see “Keyguard FAQs”)

Instructions

1. Open the keyguard request form.
2. Enter your FN, your SLP’s information, the shipping address, and the client and guardian details.
3. Enter your device size, keyguard color, and how many keyguard duplicates you need.
4. Under “Is this keyguard for your ableEXPERIENCE device?”
   • Select Yes if your QuickTalker Freestyle hasn’t been funded yet.
   • Select No if it has been funded by insurance.
5. Under “Does your case have one or more QR codes on the kickstand?”
   • Select Yes if you see four threaded holes and one or more QR codes.
   • Select No if you see a round magnet.
6. Choose your speech app and layout. These options appear only after you complete the earlier fields. If yours isn’t listed, select Other.
7. Review the keyguard preview, then select Looks Good! Please create that keyguard. or I would like to make changes.
8. Upload a screenshot of your layout if you selected Other or asked for changes. If you’re not sure of the layout name, enter the grid size.

9. Verify that you’re human, then select Submit.

What Happens After You Order

We’ll review your order and confirm your device information. Standard keyguards go straight into production. For custom keyguards, we’ll send you a layout to approve first. Your keyguard ships with installation instructions.

How do I know what iPad size I have?

If you’re unsure of your device size, measure your screen diagonally and reference the chart below.

How do I know what device type I have?

Look at the back of your device. If your device has four threaded holes and one or more QR codes on the back kickstand, then you have a QuickTalker Freestyle – Four Threaded Holes.

If you see a round MagConnect attachment on the back of your device, then you have a QuickTalker Freestyle – MagConnect.

How do I find the name of my speech app layout?

Each app uses a different vocabulary and most have adjustable grid sizes. Use our Speech App guides to find out the vocabulary that they use. Check your app settings to see what grid size you have selected.

If you’re not sure, you can always select a “custom” option on the order form or contact the ableCARE team for assistance.

How long will it take to receive my keyguard?

Standard templates: Manufacturing typically begins within two business days of your order.

Custom keyguards: Timeline varies based on design complexity and your approval process. We’ll work with you to create the right solution and keep you informed every step of the way.

Can I customize the keyguard's layout, opening shape, etc.?

Yes! You can request a custom keyguard by selecting “Other” in the AAC dropdown field. In the “Additional Comments” field, include your app name, grid size, preferred opening shape (square or round), and any other specifications. Then, attach a screenshot of your layout.

What if I need duplicate keyguards or multiple layouts/sizes?

If you need multiples of the same layout, you can add duplicates when you fill out the form.

If you need different layouts or sizes, please submit a separate request for each one.

How do I modify an existing keyguard or order a replacement?

To modify an existing keyguard, be sure to select “Other” so you can customize the layout.

If you need a replacement keyguard, submit a new keyguard request. They’re free to all QuickTalker Freestyle users under the five-year warranty.
