Required Items🔗

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • An iPad with the latest version of the AbleNet Symbol Overlay App installed.
  • A Wi-Fi-connected AirPrint-compatible printer. (Check Apple’s list of AirPrint printers if unsure.)
  • You need an active Wi-Fi connection because AirPrint requires both devices to be on the same network.
  • A completed overlay or instructions to create a new one.

Creating and Printing Your Device Overlay🔗

Step 1: Create a New Symbol Overlay

  1. Open the AbleNet Symbol Overlay app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Create New Symbol Overlay.
  3. Choose an overlay template that matches your device.
  4. Tap Start, then enter a name for your overlay.
  5. Add symbols or images by selecting the desired location for each button.
  6. When finished, tap Home to return to the main screen. Your overlay will be automatically saved.

Step 2: Print Your Overlay Using AirPrint

  1. From the My Overlays screen, open the overlay you want to print.
  2. Tap the Print icon or select Export then Print.
  3. Choose your AirPrint-compatible printer from the list.
  4. Adjust the following settings for best results:
    • Scale: Set to 100% (Actual Size) to ensure the overlay prints correctly.
    • Orientation: Select Portrait for proper alignment.
    • Paper Size: Use 8.5 x 11-inch paper, then trim as needed.
  5. Tap Print to send the overlay to your printer.

  • My overlay isn’t printing the correct size.
    • Check your printer’s scale setting—it should be 100% (Actual Size)

    • Make sure the orientation is set to Portrait.

    • We recommend printing on 8.5″ x 11″ paper and trimming it to fit your device.
