Summary
This guide will show you how to create a new symbol overlay for your device in the AbleNet Symbol Overlay App, share it, and print it using an AirPrint-compatible printer. Following these steps, you can quickly transfer overlays to other devices or print them immediately.
Estimated time to complete: 5–10 minutes
Required Items
Before you begin, make sure you have:
An iPad with the latest version of the AbleNet Symbol Overlay App installed.
A Wi-Fi-connected AirPrint-compatible printer. (Check Apple’s list of AirPrint printers if unsure.)
You need an active Wi-Fi connection because AirPrint requires both devices to be on the same network.
A completed overlay or instructions to create a new one.
Creating and Printing Your Device Overlay
Step 1: Create a New Symbol Overlay
Open the AbleNet Symbol Overlay App on your iPad.
Tap Create New Symbol Overlay.
Choose an overlay template that matches your device.
Tap Start, then enter a name for your overlay.
Add symbols or images by selecting the desired location for each button.
When finished, tap Home to return to the main screen—your overlay will be automatically saved.
Step 2: Print Your Overlay Using AirPrint
From the My Overlays screen, open the overlay you want to print.
Tap the Print icon or select Export > Print.
Choose your AirPrint-compatible printer from the list.
Adjust the following settings for best results:
Scale: Set to 100% (Actual Size) to ensure the overlay prints correctly.
Orientation: Select Portrait for proper alignment.
Paper Size: Use 8.5 x 11-inch paper, then trim as needed.
Tap Print to send the overlay to your printer.
