New places and new excitement are a great chance to practice communication; and a little prep goes a long way. Here’s how to help your child’s QuickTalker Freestyle work for your family before, during, and after a baseball game!

  • Charge it up. Fully charge the device the night before, and pack the charger just in case.
  • Preview the day. Walk through the schedule together — tour, lunch, game, autographs — so nothing is a surprise.
  • Pack an extra charger. Know where a quiet spot to charge a device is if it gets loud.
  • Keep it within reach. Mount it or keep it close, not packed away, so it’s ready whenever your child wants it.
  • Model as you go. Point to words on the device as you talk — “hot dog,” “run,” “yay!” — all day long.
  • Give it time. New sounds and excitement can mean it takes a little longer to find the right word. That’s okay.
  • Celebrate every win. A button press, a new word, a first try — all of it counts. Celebrate it.
  • Step away if needed. It’s always fine to find a quieter corner to reset. There’s no rush.
  • Talk it through. Use the device to revisit favorite moments together. What was the best part?
  • Share with your team. Tell your speech therapist, teachers, and other AAC team members what worked and what didn’t.
  • Save the memory. Snap a photo and share your story with the ableFamilies community. We love hearing them!
  • Join us. Register for an ableFamilies event for in-person meetups, virtual hangs, and more AAC practice.
