Avaz App Resource Guide🔗

Avaz offers 2 vocabulary options: Classic and Step Up. 

Avaz Classic is designed for vocabulary boards of smaller grid set sizes, like 15, 24, and 40 icons per screen. 

Avaz Step Up is designed for grid sizes over 40, anywhere from 60-117 icons per screen. You will set up this vocabulary when setting up the app.

However, you can change it at anytime. To change the vocabulary:  

  1. Select Menu
  2. Select Settings  
  3. Select Vocabulary
  4. Select Change Vocabulary  
  5. Select Avaz Classic or Avaz Step Up then hit Next 
  6. Select Use Vocabulary  
  7. Select your preferred grid size
  8. Select Use Vocabulary

  1. In the Avaz app, select Menu > Settings 
  2. Select Picture Grid  
  3. To change the grid size, select Pictures Per Screen (Grid size) 
  4. Select your desired grid size 

Please Note: Avaz has 2 vocabularies:

  1. Avaz Classic is designed for grid sizes under 40 buttons
  2. Avaz Step Up is designed for a grid size over 40 icons

If you change the grid size, Avaz may prompt you to change a vocabulary

  1. Open the Avaz app and navigate to the page you would like to edit 
  2. Select Menu at the top right  
  3. Select Edit Words  
  4. Select the icon you would like to edit or select a blank icon 
  5. Select Word 
  6. Type the word you would like the icon to be labeled as
    • The word should automatically populate in the “Speak As” section, but you can change what you want the button to say in this section as well.  
    • Once you type the word the picture should also automatically populate, but you can change this picture by selecting “Change Picture” below the image.  
    • The “word type” will also automatically populate and color code, but you can change this by selecting the drop down arrow next to the colored box  
  7. Save

  1. Select Menu at the top right 
  2. Select Edit Words 
  3. Select all the icons you would like to hide  
  4. Select Hide 
  5. Select Done

  1. Open the Avaz app  
  2. Select Settings 
  3. Select Backup and Restore 
  4. Select Create a new backup 
  5. Name the backup 
  6. Once the new backup is listed under “Your Backups”, select the newest backup 
  7. Select Share 
  8. Select Dropbox  
  9. Select Upload

Please note, Avaz requires internet connection for backups to sync to a cloud service like Dropbox. The app will automatically backup every 7 or 15 days in the app, but we recommend manual backups frequently to ensure the backup is made and customization to be preserved.

  1. Open Avaz and navigate to the page where you would like to edit  
  2. Select Menu
  3. Select Edit Words 
  4. Select the icon you would like to edit or a blank icon 
  5. Add in the word and picture  
  6. Select the Advanced tab 
  7. Select Actions  
  8. Select Action Type 
  9. Select YouTube video  
  10. Paste URL link or select the magnifying glass icon to search for a video 
  11. Hit Save  
  12. Set the Start time and End time of the video  
  13. Hit Save

  1. Open the Avaz app 
  2. Select Menu
  3. Select Settings  
  4. Underneath “Audio Settings” Select Voice.
  5. You should now see three options; you may select any of these, but they vary in tone and accent:
    • Default Voices
    • Premium Voices by ReadSpeaker,
    • or Premium Voices by Ivona (only available for English US)
    • If a voice has a cloud symbol, you can download it. Then, select the Play button to test out how a voice sounds 
  6. Select a voice by selecting the blank box next to a voice so that it has a check mark then hit Save 
  7. Within the Speech Settings of the voice, you can change the rate and pitch of the voice  
  8. To change the expressive tones voice, select “Expressive Voices” under “Speech Service”

There are two ways to search for a vocabulary word:  

  1. Option 1: At the bottom right of the app, on the brown Functions column, select the magnifying glass icon that says Search. There, you can type in your word, select it, and the top will write out the pathway to find the word.  
  2. Option 2: In Menu, select Search. There, you can type in your word, select it, and the top will write out the pathway to find the word.

In Avaz, when a word is selected, the word will by default enlarge. You can change the speed of this or turn this setting off.  

  1. In the Avaz app, select Menu
  2. Select Settings  
  3. Select Picture Grid  
  4. Under Picture Settings (Behavior), select Enlarge Word on Selection  
  5. You can select Don’t enlarge to turn the setting off, or have the button enlarge slowly, enlarge at normal speed, or enlarge quickly.

In Avaz, you are able to set a password for both the Settings and Editing the app. To set up a password:  

  1. Select Menu
  2. Select Settings  
  3. Select General
  4. Select Password Protection 
  5. Set Password – this can be a password or passcode 
  6. Select OK
