Before You Open the App: Account & Backup Setup
Before opening your speech app, we recommend setting up your Dropbox account right away so you are ready to back up any personalizations to the app.
- Go to the Utilities folder on the Home screen of the device
- Open Dropbox
- Create a free basic account
Opening the App for the First Time
When you open TouchChat for the first time, you will see the following prompts:
- Review and accept the license agreement
- Select a voice and language
- Option to add an additional language for multilingual users
- Connect automatic backups
- Option 1: Tap Connect to link your Dropbox account, or
- Option 2: tap Skip if you prefer to use manual backups
- Watch a short intro video (optional)
- Register or create an account (optional — not needed for general use)
- If you don’t want to create an account, scroll down and tap No Thanks
- Choose a vocabulary option
- Explore different options by tapping the vocabulary name and tapping Open
- To return to all options, tap Vocab in the upper-left corner, then tap Choose New Vocab

Exploring Vocabulary and Finding Words
Start exploring your vocabulary by browsing folders and pages. Use the Word Finder to quickly locate where words live within the system.
To access Word Finder:
- Go to the keyboard page
- Tap Find Word at the bottom of the screen
- Type your desired word
- Tap Find
Basic Customization: Making the App Personal
Begin simple customizations to better reflect the communicator’s needs and preferences.
How to Add or Edit Buttons:
- Tap the folder where you’d like to add or edit a button
- Tap Menu and select Edit Page
- Tap an existing icon or create a new icon to customize
- Tap Save
- Tap Done
Protecting Customizations
To prevent unwanted changes, it can be helpful to use a menu passcode.
- In the vocabulary, select Menu in the top right of the page.
- Select Settings
- Scroll to Editing and select the text box next to Menu Passcode
- Type in a passcode
- Toggle ON “Use Menu Passcode”
- Select Done

Don’t Forget: Back Up Your App
Regular backups help protect vocabulary and customizations. We recommend backing up:
- After initial setup
- Following major edits
- On a regular schedule
