How to Back Up TouchChat
Everyone should back up their customized vocabulary boards frequently. If your speech app is accidentally deleted or modified, or you need to send your device in for repair, you will have a copy to restore quickly.
We recommend using Dropbox for your backups. You can sign up for a free Dropbox basic account at dropbox.com/basic or through the Dropbox app if you have it installed on your device.
Backing Up Manually
- On the QuickTalker, open the Dropbox app and log in (if prompted).
- Open the TouchChat app.
- Go to the Files page by selecting Vocab (upper left)
- Select Choose New Vocab.
- In the menu (upper right), select: Import/Export Vocab
- Select Dropbox then, Export to Dropbox.
- If you’re signed in but haven’t connected Dropbox yet, you’ll be redirected to the Dropbox app.
- Tap Allow to give TouchChat access, then you’ll return to TouchChat.
- Select the vocabulary file you’d like to back up.
- Tap Upload. You should see a confirmation message: Upload Complete.
- Open the Dropbox app. Check under Files (bottom left) to confirm the folder/file path:

Backing Up Automatically
- Go to the Files page by selecting Vocab (upper left)
- Select Choose New Vocab.
- Open the menu (upper right) and select Automatic Backup.
- Enter a folder name using letters and numbers only (e.g., ChildNameTouchChatBackup).
- Tap Save.
- Select a cloud service → choose Dropbox.
- If you’re not already logged in, TouchChat will prompt you to log in or create a Dropbox account (a basic Dropbox account is free!).
- Select Done.
Your customized vocabulary file will now automatically back up to Dropbox whenever the device is connected to Wi-Fi!

Backing Up a File With Recorded Videos
If you are backing up a vocabulary file with recorded videos from the device photo library, the back up will NOT include these videos. When restoring the file, each button that linked to a video will need to be re-programmed.
You will need to follow the steps below to back up each video to Dropbox, then on the new device, save the videos to the photos app and restore the videos to the vocabulary file.
Step 1: Backup videos to Dropbox
- Login to Dropbox on the QuickTalker Freestyle.
- Open the photos app on the device.
- Select a video by checking the box with an arrow icon in the top left corner.
- Select Dropbox from the options.
- Select a folder, then select Upload.
Step 2: Save video files to photo app on a new device
- Log into Dropbox on the QuickTalker Freestyle.
- Select the three dots next to the video file in Dropbox.
- Select Save Video. The video should now appear in the photos app.
Step 3: Restore videos to the vocabulary file
- Go to iPad settings.
- Scroll to “apps”
- Select TouchChat
- Set photos to Full Access
- Toggle ON “Media & Apple Music.”
- Toggle ON “Allow Media.”
- Open the TouchChat app and open the restored vocabulary file.
- Navigate to the page with a button linked to a video.
- Select Menu.
- Select Edit Page.
- Select the button, then Edit This Button.
- Scroll to “Button Actions.”
- Play video should already be populated – select this.
- Select Library Video – select the video from the photo library.
- Select Save.
