Update an SCEP Certificate
You may have received a text or email asking you to update your loved one’s QuickTalker Freestyle speech device. Updating the certificate ensures that your device is secure. Follow the steps below to update the SCEP certificate.
What is an SCEP?🔗
Your loved one’s QuickTalker Freestyle is managed using AbleNet’s mobile device management (MDM) software. The MDM ensures that your device meets your insurance’s requirements for funding and can receive ableCARE service.
The Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP) certificate allows the device to securely communicate with AbleNet’s MDM software whenever it’s connected to Wi-Fi. This certificate needs to be renewed every two years to keep everything working smoothly.
Steps to Renew SCEP🔗
- Connect your device to Wi-Fi and leave it connected overnight. That’s it!
- The device should automatically update while connected to Wi-Fi.
Check SCEP Update🔗
The following day, verify that the SCEP updated overnight.
- Tap Utilities.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap VPN & Device Management.
- Tap MDM Profile.
- Tap More Details.
- Under “SCEP Device Identity Certificate” find the “Expires” date.
- The date you see should be two years in the future.
My SCEP Didn’t Renew🔗
If the date isn’t updated, these could be the reasons why.
- You are not eligible for an SCEP update – The SCEP certificate is only eligible to be renewed 180 days or less before it expires. If you’ve connected to Wi-Fi in the past, it may have already been renewed.
- Overnight Wi-Fi connection wasn’t enough time – Leave the QuickTalker Freestyle connected to Wi-Fi for 24 hours. Sometimes it needs a full day to correctly sync.
- Your Wi-Fi connection is unreliable or restricted – If you’re connected to Wi-Fi in a school or clinical setting, your Wi-Fi network may block the renewal command from being received. Connecting to a cellular hotspot may resolve this issue.
