How To Update the SCEP Certificate on Your QuickTalker Freestyle
You may have recently received a text or email asking you to update your loved one’s QuickTalker Freestyle speech device.
Your loved one’s QuickTalker Freestyle is managed using AbleNet’s mobile device management (MDM) software. This management is required to ensure the device is set up correctly for insurance purposes and to install the speech app your speech therapist has selected for your loved one.
The Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP) certificate allows the device to securely communicate with AbleNet’s MDM software whenever it’s connected to Wi-Fi. This certificate needs to be renewed every two years to keep everything working smoothly.
How to Renew Your SCEP Certificate
Connect the QuickTalker Freestyle to Wi-Fi and leave it connected overnight.
The following day, verify that the SCEP certificate has been renewed.
On the QuickTalker Freestyle, tap the Utilities folder.
Tap the Settings app.
Tap VPN & Device Management.
Tap MDM Profile.
Tap More Details.
Under SCEP Device Identity Certificate, look at the Expires date. The date you see should be two years in the future.
Troubleshooting
If the certificate did not renew overnight, try the following:
Verify renewal eligibility
The SCEP certificate is only eligible to be renewed 180 days or less before it expires. If you’ve connected to Wi-Fi in the past, it may have already been renewed.
Verify the certificate is not already expired
If the SCEP certificate is already expired and you don’t need any support at this time, no action is needed. Note that in the future, if you need remote support, additional steps will be required to renew the SCEP certificate and establish a remote connection.
Leave connected to Wi-Fi another 24-hours
In some cases, you may need to leave the QuickTalker Freestyle connected to Wi-Fi for another 24 hours to allow for all systems to sync.
Connect to a cellular hot spot
If you’re connected to Wi-Fi in a school or clinical setting, your Wi-Fi network may block the renewal command from being received. Connecting to a cellular hotspot may resolve this issue.
