If your loved one’s speech-language pathologist (SLP) has recommended a speech app that requires a subscription or in-app purchase, a new Apple Account must be created for your loved one. 

If your loved one is 18 or older: 

Apple requires a government-issued ID (state driver’s license or ID, or passport) or credit card to verify their age when setting up the Apple Account account. 

If your loved one is under 18: 

As the adult parent or caregiver, you will need to: 

• Use an existing adult Apple Account or create a new adult account, then activate Family Sharing 
• Create a child Apple Account for your loved one and link it to the Family Sharing account 
• Approve all app downloads and purchases on their behalf through Family Sharing

In states where an App Store Accountability Act is active, and the SLP has selected a speech app requiring a subscription, the QuickTalker Freestyle is shipped directly to the parent or caregiver.  

This is because the ASAA requires that the parent or caregiver do the following if their loved one is under 18: 

• Create Apple Accounts for both themselves and their loved one  
• Authorize the app download through Apple  
• Authorize the app purchase through Apple 

To comply with the App Store Accountability Act while using the QuickTalker Freestyle, you’ll need to create a child account linked to your parent account with parental controls and obtain parental consent for app downloads and in-app purchases.

This guide walks you through setting up a child account on your personal iPhone or iPad, then signing your child into the QuickTalker Freestyle device.

Required Items🔗

• Your iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later
• Your personal Apple Account and password
• A credit card or payment method (for managing purchases and subscriptions and age verification)
• The QuickTalker Freestyle device

Part 1: Set Up Your Parent Account 🔗

If you already have a parent account, you may skip this step.

1. Open Settings on your personal iPhone or iPad
2. Tap your name at the top to enter your account settings.
3. Verify that your personal Apple Account is active.
   • IMPORTANT: Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple Account you want to use as the Parent Account.
4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (if you haven’t already):
   • Tap Password & Security.
   • Tap Two-Factor Authentication and toggle it ON.
     • This protects your account and is required to manage a Child Apple Account
5. Confirm your Payment Method:
   • Go back to your account settings
   • Tap Payment & Shipping
   • Ensure a valid credit card or payment method is on file
     • This is a requirement of Parent Accounts to make purchases in the App Store

Part 2: Create a Child Account Through Family Sharing🔗

Activate Family Sharing and Create a Child Account

1. Open Settings on your personal iPhone or iPad
2. Tap your name at the top to enter your account settings.
3. Tap Family Sharing.
4. A pop-up will appear explaining what Family Sharing is. Tap Continue.
   • If you already have Family Sharing set up, tap Add Family Member instead.
5. Select Create Child Account
6. Enter your child’s name and birthday, then tap Create Child Account.
7. A “Parental Consent” pop-up will appear. Tap Continue.
8. Enter your Parent Apple Account password and tap Sign In.
9. A pop-up will appear asking for a verification code. Head over to the email connected to the account, grab the code, and enter it here.
10. A “Family Privacy Disclosure” pop-up will appear. Read through and then tap Agree.
11. A “Terms and Conditions” pop-up will appear. Read through and tap Agree.

Create an iCloud Email for Device User

1. Create an iCloud email address for your child and tap Continue.
   • A good example email is [childsname][email protected]
   • If you are prompted to enter an existing email address, tap Don’t have an email address and then Create iCloud Email Address.
2. If the entered email address is available, tap Create Email Address.
3. Create a password for your child’s account.
   • DO NOT use your child’s first or last name in the password.
4. Tap Continue.

Set Up Verification and Parental Controls

1. A “Phone Number” pop-up will appear, explaining that when this account signs in, a verification code will be sent to the number presented. Confirm the phone number.
   • IMPORTANT: the phone number must match what is on your Parent Apple Account.
2. Tap Use +1 (xxx) xxx-xxx to send a code to the referred phone number.
3. Head to your text messages, grab the code, and enter it into the verification screen.
4. Tap Continue on the Parental Controls pop-up.
5. A “Lock Parental Controls” pop-up will appear. Enter a 4-digit passcode, then re-enter to confirm.
6. Enable “Ask to Buy” by tapping Continue.
7. An “All Set” page will appear. Tap Done.

Part 3: Adding a Child Account to QuickTalker Freestyle🔗

1. Power on the QuickTalker Freestyle and connect it to Wi-Fi.
2. Open Settings.
3. Tap Apple Account on the lefthand side.
4. Tap Sign in Manually.
5. Enter the email address and password for the Child Account you just created on you personal iPhone or iPad.
6. Tap Continue.
7. A code will be sent to the phone number associated with your Parent Account.
8. Open the verification text on your phone, and then enter the number on your QuickTalker Freestyle.
9. You have successfully signed into the Child Account!

To install any speech app that requires a subscription or in-app purchase, approval will need to be granted by the parent through Apple’s native “Ask to Buy” feature. These requests are sent automatically to the parent account via iMessage. Please see the instructions below for what the request and approval process looks like.

What you need:🔗

• Your QuickTalker Freestyle
  • You must have a Child Account already set up on the device
• Your personal iPhone or iPad
  • You must have the Parent Account set up and Family Sharing turned on.

Part 1: On the QuickTalker Freestyle🔗

1. Find the desired speech app in the App Store and tap Get.
2. Sign in to the Child’s Apple Account
3. Tap Install on the pop-up
4. An “Ask Permission” pop-up will appear. Select Ask. The next steps will be completed on the personal iPhone or iPad.

Part 2: On a Personal iPhone or iPad🔗

1. Open iMessage
2. Open the request from the Child’s iCloud account.
3. Tap Review the request
4. The app store page for the speech app will open. A banner above will appear asking you to approve or decline.
5. Tap Approve.
6. Enter your parent Apple ID Password and tap OK
7. You’ll return to the iMessage. Make sure you see “Approved” at the bottom of the request.
8. Check the QuickTalker Freestyle and you’ll see it begin to install!

Part 3: Activating a Subscription-Based App on the QuickTalker Freestyle🔗

1. Complete the subscription start steps.  
2. Open the speech app.  
3. In the top-right, select the Speaking Upgrade button. It looks like a speech bubble with a slash through it.  
4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the subscription.  
5. When starting the subscription, you may see “Invalid Address.” Tap Continue and fill out the “Billing Address.”  
6. This is an App Store requirement, and your personal account will not be billed. The account is paid through the gift card balance for the Apple Account.  
7. Tap the blue check mark in the top right corner.  
8. A prompt will appear to ask permission to start the subscription. 
9. On your personal device with the parent account on it, approve the prompt.  
10. Once approved, the subscription will be started and you can use the speech app!
