Introduction to Modeling
You’re Ready For Your Next Step
Now that you’ve gotten to know your QuickTalker Freestyle, it’s time to give it a try with your loved one. You can do this using a technique called modeling.
You don’t need to wait until your loved one is “ready.” Just start modeling during simple, everyday moments and they will begin to learn.
What Is Modeling?
Modeling is a teaching strategy where you use the QuickTalker Freestyle to demonstrate how it helps to communicate. You simply tap a word on the device as you say it. You do not expect them to respond or copy you. This shows how messages are built and what the device is for without putting pressure on them to perform.
Why It Matters
When your loved one sees and hears you use their device, they will begin to understand that it is a tool for communication. They may even get excited-be enthusiastic with them!
Even if they haven’t touched the device yet, they’re learning with every word you model. So keep trying and showing and tapping!
How To Model (Step by Step)
1. Place it. Keep the device where your loved one can see and reach it.
2. Pick 1–2 words. Choose words that fit the moment — like eat, more, go, or all done.
3. Say it and tap it. Speak naturally and tap the word at the same time.
4. Invite don’t expect. You’re showing, not testing. No need to ask questions or wait for a response. Watching and listening are powerful ways to learn.
5. Keep it natural. Use your regular voice and move on. Every time you model a word, you help your loved one see that communication matters.
Try it in Real Life
Short, repeated routines are perfect for modeling because they happen every day. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Snack time:
Say “You want more crackers.”
Tap ‘more’ or ‘crackers’
Play time:
Say “Ready, Set, Go!”
Tap ‘go’
Bedtime:
Say “Let’s open the toothpaste.”
Tap ‘open’
Remember… You’re showing the way.
Be patient with yourself and your loved one, and give yourselves time to learn and grow together. Every time you model, you’re helping your loved one discover how to use their voice, one word at a time.
