Why Our Apps Are Asking About Your Age
You may have seen a prompt asking you to confirm your age range when opening one of our apps. This article explains what that prompt is, why it appears, and what it means for you.
It’s Not About Content; It’s About the Law🔗
Our apps are rated for all ages. The content inside hasn’t changed, and we haven’t added any restricted material. So why the age prompt?
New laws called the App Store Accountability Act (ASAA) in several U.S. states now legally require app developers to verify whether their users are adults or minors, regardless of the app’s content rating. This is a compliance obligation that falls on us as developers, not a reflection of anything in the app itself. These states include Texas (effective June 10, 2026) and Louisiana (effective July 1, 2026), with others potentially following.
To meet these requirements, Apple has built a privacy-friendly tool called the Declared Age Range API. Rather than collecting your birth date or personal ID, Apple simply shares a general age category with us (e.g., under 13, 13–15, 16–17, or 18 and over) based on information already associated with your Apple Account. We never see your exact age, and no additional personal data is sent to us.
What You’ll See🔗
When you open SoundingBoard, ableCARE, or Symbol Overlay Maker apps on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 26 or later, you may be shown a system prompt from Apple asking whether you’re willing to share your age range with the app. This prompt is generated by Apple, not by us, and it looks similar to other permission requests you may have seen, like asking to share your location or contacts.
Here’s What to Expect🔗
- The prompt appears once and is managed at the system level by Apple.
- If you choose to share, Apple passes a general age category to the app, nothing more.
- If you’re a parent or guardian of a minor using the app, you may be asked to provide consent through your Apple Account.
- If you’re an adult, nothing about your experience in the app will change.
Your Privacy is Protected🔗
We know that an age-related prompt can feel unexpected, especially in an app used professionally for speech therapy. We want to be clear:
- We do not collect or store your age or date of birth
- Apple handles all verification using information from your Apple Account
- Our apps work the same way they always have. The prompt is a legal, not a gate on features.
Why Are We Doing This Across All Three Apps? 🔗
Because these laws apply broadly to app developers distributing in regulated states, we’ve implemented Apple’s Declared Age Range API across all three of our apps to keep them available and compliant for the therapists and staff who depend on them. Pulling out of regulated regions or ignoring the requirement isn’t a responsible option for tools that professionals rely on every day.
