This article will cover how to activate an external device, such as a switch-adapted toy or appliance, with a BIG Step-by-Step switch. You can watch the video below or follow the written instructions to learn how.

Required Items🔗

• BIG Step-by-Step switch
• Switch-adapted toy or appliance (PowerLink and Battery Device Adapter available for toys and appliances that have not been adapted)

Instructions🔗

1. Select the level you’d like to record on by moving the Level switch to 1, 2, or 3.
2. Press and hold the RECORD button on the back of the device until the LED lights up solid Red, then release the switch.
3. Press and hold down the switch top of your device and begin speaking.
   • The LED will flash red when recording.
4. Speak your message into the device and then quickly press the RECORD button once to assign that message to an external appliance.
   • The LED will flash yellow once.
5. Release the switch top.
6. Repeat this process or record any additional messages for the other levels.
7. Press the RECORD button once to exit record mode.
   • The LED will turn off.
8. Once you’ve completed recording all messages, plug your toy or appliance into the 1/8-in (3.5-mm) labeled Toy/Appliance output on the back of the device. 
9. The toy or appliance will now activate for the length of the message.

Tips and Troubleshooting🔗

• We recommend a message of at least 3-5 seconds for the output to activate your toy or appliance.
• You can increase the length of the toy or appliance activation time by recording a longer message. 
• Some toys and appliances require a 1/8-in (3.5-mm) mono plug-to-plug adapter cable to connect an external device. This is included with your BIG Step-by-Step.
