Primary Function of AAC Device

The primary function of an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device is to serve as a speech-generating tool; essentially, as the user’s voice for communication and language access. This core purpose must always be respected and prioritized. Consistent access to the user’s voice through their speech-generating device (SGD) is critical for meaningful communication. While some AAC applications or devices may offer secondary features and applications, it is essential to carefully evaluate their use to ensure they do not interfere with or diminish the user’s access to their primary means of communication.
As therapists, it’s essential that we always honor that purpose. Consistent and uninterrupted access to their voice should be a top priority in every session and environment. While many AAC systems include helpful secondary tools like visual schedules, timers, or games, we need to be mindful that these features don’t interfere with communication access. At the end of the day, the AAC device is their voice, and that should always come first!
Visual support outside of AAC may still be very beneficial to many clients/students. There are alternate ways of integrating visual schedules, social stories, timers, etc into a client/student’s intervention; such as the use of these apps on a secondary device, lite tech/paper based tools (ie; laminated and velcro visual schedules, printed social stories, etc) and physical timers (just like you use in the kitchen)! These can still make an impact- while leaving consistent access to the user’s AAC system for communication purposes. It is important to assess everyone’s unique needs and collaborate with caregivers to determine if secondary features/functions are appropriate for their device.
Additionally, it is important to consider if adding educational games or other academic apps is appropriate, as well as providing parent with education on the potential pros and cons of adding secondary programs to an AAC system.
