Grid for iPad
Before You Open the App: Account & Backup Setup
Before opening your speech app, we recommend setting up your Dropbox account right away so you are ready to back up any personalizations to the app.
- Go to the Utilities folder on the Home screen of the device
- Open Dropbox
- Create a free basic account
Opening the App for the First Time
- Tap Get Started
- Create your Smartbox account (this will link with your Dropbox account to back up and restore Grids, as well as enable remote editing)
- Choose your language
- Choose your voice
- Follow the prompts to enable or turn off your preferred tools
- You will be brought to the Grid Explorer page. Learn more about Grid Explorer
- Tap the More menu (three-dot icon) in the top-right corner of the screen
- Tap Add Grid Set
- Choose a Grid type (symbol, text, etc.)
- Tap Add once you have chosen a Grid set (e.g. SuperCore 30)
- Repeat these steps if you’d like to add or view multiple Grid sets
Exploring Vocabulary and Finding Words
Start exploring your vocabulary by browsing folders and pages.
Use the Word Finder to quickly locate where words live within the system. To access Word Finder, tap the More menu in the top-right corner, then tap Find Word.

Hint: In many Grid sets, there is also a Word Finder button within the vocabulary itself, usually on the spelling or keyboard page!
Basic Customization: Making the App Personal
Begin simple customizations to better reflect the communicator’s needs and preferences.
How to Add or Edit Buttons
- Open the Grid set and navigate to the page to be edited
- Tap the More menu in the top-right corner, then tap Edit Grids
- Tap the button to be edited
- A menu will appear with different options. For a button that will speak, tap Write and Speak
- Type the button label in the text area
- It will populate with an image. Tap the image, then tap Find Image to search for other images
- Tap Symbols to browse options. Other image sources include:
- Photo Library — pull images from the Photos app
- Web Search — search the internet
- Camera — take a photo directly
- Tap Done, then tap Finish Editing

Protecting Customizations
To prevent unwanted changes, hide access to settings and editing from within the app:
- Open iPad Settings and select Apps on the left-hand side
- Select Grid on the right-hand side
- Toggle off Display Options in Menu Bar
- When in Grid for iPad, the More menu will no longer appear in the top-right corner
Don’t Forget: Back Up Your Grid for iPad
Regular backups help protect vocabulary and customizations. We recommend backing up:
- After initial setup
- Following major edits
- On a regular schedule
