Before You Open the App: Account and Backup Setup
Before opening your speech app, we recommend setting up your Dropbox account right away so you are ready to back up any personalization’s on the app!
- Go to the Utilities folder on the Home Page of the device
- Open Dropbox
- Create a free/basic account
Opening the App for the First Time
- Select your language and create an account
- Select Voice(s) (Flexspeak or SymbolStix)

If you want to change the grid size/layout:
- Go to settings (top right corner)
- Select Grid Size
- Choose from 20, 40 or 56 buttons
Exploring Vocabulary and Finding Words
Start exploring your vocabulary by browsing folders and pages. Locate the word finder/search tool to help you quickly find where words live within the system.
How to access Word Finder/Search in Flexspeak
- Tap the search icon in the top left corner of the app screen
- Type in the word you’d like to search
- Select the desired word/icon
- Tap through the highlighted locations to find the word
Basic Customization: Making the App Personal
The following resources will help you begin simple customizations to better reflect the communicator’s needs and preferences.
Protecting Customizations
To prevent unwanted changes, it can be helpful to limit access to editing.
- Click the gear icon to access Settings in Flexspeak
- Select Display & Navigation
- Toggle On “Require Unlock to Customize”
Lock the Device to the App (Optional)
If you want to restrict access to only this app, enable Guided Access.
To lock out specific areas of the screen:
- Triple-click the Home or Power button
- On the Guided Access setup screen, circle areas to disable
- Start Guided Access and confirm locked areas appear grayed out
Don’t Forget: Back Up Your App
Regular backups help protect vocabulary and customizations.
- After initial setup
- Following major edits
- On a regular schedule
Backup instructions:
Changes made to Flexspeak Grid will sync with your account automatically, but it is always a good idea to export your data after making major customizations to your app. You can do this within the Settings on Flexspeak:
- Click the gear icon to access Settings
- Select Data management
- Tap Manage your data
- Tap Export my data
- Select the location to export (we recommend Dropbox)
