Battery Installation
We recommend always using regular, alkaline batteries to avoid any issues with recording or playing messages. Batteries labeled “Heavy Duty,” “Industrial Grade,” or “ProCell” handle power differently than regular alkaline batteries, and when used in our devices they behave similar to low or dead batteries.
Make sure your battery is new and recently purchased. Batteries that have been used for other devices or those that have been sitting a while may not have the power to operate the switch correctly.
Clearing All Messages
If you are experiencing issues with sound after replacing the batteries, we recommend clearing all messages. The process is the same for the AbleNet BIGmack, LITTLEmack, Step-by-Step, iTalk2, and iTalk4 speech-generating devices as shown below.
Using External Switches with iTalk4
You can connect all AbleNet external switches to the iTalk4 for users who need a different activation method. This allows a user to play a message using the switches that best meets their mobility needs. As an illustration, the video below demonstrates how to connect an external switch to the iTalk2. The same process applies to the iTalk4.
Using Toys and Appliances with iTalk4
The iTalk4 can activate switch-enabled toys and appliances through its input/output jacks. This allows a user to play a message and activate a toy or accessory at the same time. Battery-operated toys can be made switch-enabled using the AbleNet Battery Device Adapter, and any item with a plug can be switch-enabled using the AbleNet PowerLink 4. The video below demonstrates how to use the iTalk 2 to activate toys and appliances. You can apply the process to the iTalk4 in the same way.
