The status of the iTalk4 is displayed via the LED positioned above the record switch. Here’s the LED color and light pattern for each status;

  • Red LED
    • Flashing, followed by a pause, followed by flashing – the battery is low
    • Steady for 1 second – the device is powered on
    • Steady – the device is in record mode
    • Continuous flashing – a message is being recorded
    • Single flash – a message is being played
    • Flashing, followed by audible warbled beep – the device’s memory has been cleared
  • Yellow LED
    • Steady for 1 second – the device has no recorded message
    • Flashing (while in Record mode) – the device’s memory/ storage is full

Battery Installation

We recommend always using regular, alkaline batteries to avoid any issues with recording or playing messages. Batteries labeled “Heavy Duty,” “Industrial Grade,” or “ProCell” handle power differently than regular alkaline batteries, and when used in our devices they behave similar to low or dead batteries.

Make sure your battery is new and recently purchased. Batteries that have been used for other devices or those that have been sitting a while may not have the power to operate the switch correctly.

Clearing All Messages

The video below demonstrates how to clear all messages on the AbleNet BIGmack, LITTLEmack, Step-by-Step, iTalk2, and iTalk4 speech generating devices.

Using External Switches with iTalk4

All AbleNet external switches can be connected to the iTalk4 for users who need a different activation method. This allows a user to play a message using the switches that best meets their mobility needs. The video below demonstrates how to connect an external switch to the iTalk2. The same process applies to the iTalk4.

Using Toys and Appliances with iTalk4

The iTalk4 can be used to activate switch-enabled toys and appliances by using the input/output jacks. This allows a user to play a message and activate a toy or accessory at the same time. Battery-operated toys can be made switch-enabled using the AbleNet Battery Device Adapter, and any item with a plug can be switch-enabled using the AbleNet PowerLink 4. The video below demonstrates how to use the iTalk 2 to activate toys and appliances. The same process applies to the iTalk4.
