Overview

This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on remotely assisting someone using a QuickTalker Freestyle or iPad by leveraging Apple’s FaceTime and Screen Sharing features. While true remote control isn’t natively supported on iPads, this method enables visual guidance and indirect control, making it especially useful for Caregivers, Educators, and Teletherapy.

By the end of this guide, you will be able to:

  • Start a FaceTime call with screen sharing enabled
  • View and guide the iPad user’s actions in real-time
  • Offer remote support on the device

Estimated time to complete: 5–10 minutes

Required Items

Before getting started, ensure you have the following:

  • Two Apple devices: One iPad (the device being assisted) and one secondary device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac) to initiate the FaceTime call
  • iOS/iPad/macOS version 15 or later is required on both devices
  • An active Apple ID on both devices and FaceTime enabled
  • Wi-Fi or cellular data connection for both users

Instructions

1. Start a FaceTime Call

  • Action: On the supporting device, open the FaceTime app and start a video call with the iPad user.
  • Expected Result: The iPad rings, and the user answers the video call.

2. Enable Screen Sharing on iPad

  • Action: During the FaceTime call, the iPad user should tap the screen, tap the Share Content button (a screen icon), and select Share My Screen.
  • Expected Result: After a 3-second countdown, you will see the iPad’s screen on your device.

3. Guide the iPad User Remotely

  • Action: Use your voice or visual cues to guide the iPad user through actions—such as opening QuickTalker, navigating menus, or adjusting settings.
  • Expected Result: You can watch the iPad screen live and provide step-by-step instructions to help users operate their devices.

4. End the Session

  • Action: When finished, users can tap End Call to disconnect the FaceTime session.
  • Expected Result: FaceTime ends, and screen sharing is turned off.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • If you don’t see the Share Screen option, update the iPad to iPadOS 15 or later.
  • Lagging screen or audio: Ask users to switch to a stronger Wi-Fi connection or restart their devices.
  • If your device isn’t ringing, Verify that FaceTime is enabled in Settings > FaceTime and that Do Not Disturb is off.
